The first STF was set up at Dylan Thomas Community School in partnership with the LEA as part of the LEA’s commitment to integrating pupils with moderate to severe learning difficulties. The provision provides a type of education within the mainstream setting which is consistent with the quality of specialist curriculum associated with special schools together with opportunities for integration with peers. The STF is a full and integral part of the school.
In KS3 the pupils are taught basic numeracy and literacy together with humanities subjects. The pupils also follow a course called “New Horizons” which is an activity based curriculum supporting life skills. All other subjects, where appropriate, are taught in the mainstream with TA support.
In KS4 the pupils beside numeracy and literacy follow ASDAN’s “Transition Challenge”, which is a modular course involving skills needed for adult living. The pupils also follow an appropriate course within the option choices. There is also a work experience placement supported by our own staff or by specialist provision – Wise or Local Aid.
All pupils are encouraged to take part in a number of social and sporting events during the year swimming , 5-a-side football, tag rugby, gymnastics, athletics, the Grand Theatre and the Gnoll Challenge to name a few.
It is important that the pupils develop their whole self, building in confidence and aware of their capabilities.
