About Ysgol Crug Glas

Ysgol Crug Glas is a successful special school situated in the heart of the city of Swansea.

The school currently provides for 55 pupils aged between 3 and 19 years. All have profound and multiple, or severe and complex learning difficulties. Many have associated communication, behavioural and / or sensory difficulties, and a significant number have very specific health care requirements. All pupils are considered to be unique individuals, with the potential to develop and learn. Our aim as a school is to find the means to maximise this potential especially in enabling communication.

The school has a large staff and a high level of support is provided to meet the needs of the children. We are committed to the professional development of all our staff and have been an Investor in People since 2004. The school attained Healthy Schools’ Awards in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 and the ECO-Schools Green Flag Award in 2007. We have been awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark at both primary and secondary levels in 2006 and in 2009. We continue to keep up to date with the requirements for these awards by incorporating activities and skills within the curriculum.

We aim to provide a very broad curriculum based on first-hand sensory-based activities which integrate learning with therapy and a high quality of care.  We employ our own School Nurses and Music Therapist.  The school has its own hydrotherapy pool, dark room, white room and soft play room as well as a rebound therapy facility.  Our facilities are also used by pupils with special educational needs ( SEN ) who are educated in mainstream schools throughout the City and County of Swansea , and we employ an ‘outreach’ teacher who provides support, advice, training and a resource-lending service to staff working with pupils with SEN in mainstream schools.

The school has a very strong sense of community. Parents are actively involved in the day-to-day life of the school as well as the Parent Teacher Association – The Friends of Ysgol Crug Glas. The Friends provide invaluable support in the form of extra equipment and facilities for the school and raised over £420,000 towards the cost of the newer building which  accommodates three senior classrooms, a nursing and medical suite, a specialist art room, therapy rooms, parents room, staff room and training facility.  The new building was completed through a close partnership with the Local Education Authority and won a design award for accessibility.  It has enabled us to improve our pupils experience and to develop the school’s role in supporting families throughout Swansea who have a disabled youngster. The school organises and hosts a popular and unique Summer Playscheme linked with Interplay. The school premises are currently being assessed for any upgrading needed to ensure all areas of the school meet Health and Safety and fire regulation guidelines.
