Birchgrove STF pupils again took part of the Gnoll Challenge, at The Gnoll Country Park Neath.

Birchgrove STF Pupils enjoyed end of term visits to both Heatherton and Oakwood Park, as the pictures show, everyone had a great time.

Birchgrove S.T.F Pupil’s were given a taste of Welsh Heritage and local history on their visit to the Gower Heritage Centre.

They took part in a pottery class, saw a The hand spinning of wool and a working flour grinding watermill They visited a Village setup of what life was like in a Welsh village during the 1940’s, and fed some rescued animals

Finaly were given lessons on how to use the traditional welsh river craft “the coracle”, and took part in a pottery class making their own clay pot’s.

As part of the school’s Climate Action Day, the children from the S.T.F took park in a beach clean at Aberavon. The children worked extremely hard clearing rubbish from one of the public children’s playgrounds, as can be seen from the photographs taken.

As part of Swansea in Bloom, STF Pupils were joined by Grace Davies and Taylor Williams from mainstream and given the task of creating something to illustrate the Dylan Thomas quote ”the sun that leaps from the petals”. To tie in with Climate Action Day they decided to create a picture on a canvas of recycled plastic bottle tops. The finished piece of artwork now hangs proudly in the school garden.

STF Charity Christmas Concert and Coffee Morning for Care for Uganda
 
On the 12th December 2012, the Birchgrove STF held their annual Christmas Concert and Coffee Morning; The event was also a fundraiser for the charity “Care for Uganda” raising £120.

The ‘all Singing and dancing’ production was arranged by Mr Lear and performed before Swansea East MP Sian James, Wynn Jones Chair of Governors, Karen Holland Head Teacher  and the children’s parents, was a great success and enjoyed by all that attended.

Pan Disability Football Festival

The Pan Disability football Festival, is a National 5 a side Championship for schools, run by the FAW and Disability Sport Wales that allows juniors and young adults, to play in pan-disability teams and become National Champions.

These are teams comprising of individuals with differing impairments, all playing together in the same team structure. Here players with cerebral palsy or limited movement, play alongside, those with a learning or behavioural difficulty.

Each team is given an overall classification A to C depending on the overall ability, and play a series of qualifying competitions at area and regional level, within that classification. The finals of this national competition are held at The Maldwyn Leisure Centre in Mid Wales in May or June.

Over the last 7 years Birchgrove Comprehensive have taken 13 teams representing the school to this National Championship, and had countless area and champions. Well done to everyone involved, and congratulations for all your sucsess.

The Gnoll Challenge

The Local Aid ‘Gnoll Challenge’ is an unique event aimed at schools that support children with special educational needs. 2,000 children and young people from 90+ schools across Neath and Port Talbot, Swansea, Bridgend and Carmarthenshire are invited to participate in an event that’s focus on team challenges. These challenges are specifically designed to enable children and young people with special educational needs to compete for their school along with their mainstream peers. The event is held at Neath’s Gnoll Country Park.

The young people involved are encouraged to develop confidence, leadership, self esteem and team building skills as well as having fun and getting very wet and muddy.

Over the last 2 years Teams from Birchgrove Comprehensive have won ‘Best Dressed Team’, ‘Best Chant’, ‘Named as Top Team for their days competition’, and been placed in the ‘The Weeks Top Ten’ several times, with a highest place being 3rd over all.

Army Challenge day

 Involved teams of 8 pupils, 4 with additional learning needs and 4 from mainstream working together on outdoor problem solving activities organised by Army Career Wales.
