Dear Year 5 parents

This spring term newsletter outlines some key information for the coming half term.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask me, or message me through class dojo, as I am always happy to answer your questions.  Don’t forget to always check twitter and the website for more information about what is happening in the school.  Thank you for your support so far during this year, and I look forward to having another successful half term in year 5.

Miss Jones.

In year 5 we are a rights respecting class and we believe all children have the right to play and learn. So don’t forget to ensure your child always has a coat to stay warm when playing with their friends outside this term.

This half term we will be completing a block of indoor P.E looking at dance. P.E will be every Friday morning, so please ensure you child has a suitable P.E kit for indoors every Friday. Please can you encourage children bringing their P.E kit into school in a bag, so they have to get changed into it, rather than wearing their P.E kit into school.

Reading books

All of the children have reading books that have been issued to their level. Please try to read every night and return the book to school every day. Once a week children will read with a teacher and be able to change their book if needed.

This half term we will continue to be looking at a history topic and will learn all about World War 2. We will look at all the key events, people and what happened here in Swansea as well as across the world. We will complete a maths project based on rationing and the food in the war.

This half term children will be given homework in preparation for the national tests taking place in May. The homework will be questions that will help prepare the children, so helping them to complete it would be greatly appreciated.  In addition to this spellings will be given out on Monday and the children will be tested every Friday. Alongside practising spellings at home, additional times tables practise is always welcomed to support your children.

Literacy and Numeracy

In year 5 the children will have the opportunity to use their literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects throughout the school day. We will focus on key fundamental maths skills in our directed lessons, the children will then have to apply these skills to solve problems in other subjects. We will complete daily mental maths activities and focus on our times tables regularly. In literacy we will look at different genres of writing, we will start by looking at newspaper articles linked to out topic (WW2). We will learn these text types in detail, allowing us to write our own versions really well. Our handwriting, punctuation, grammar and spelling skills will also be developed throughout this half term.
