Dear Year 5 parents,

Welcome back after a lovely long summer holdiday, and a very warm welcome into your new class.  I hope you have had a wonderful break  and are ready to start year 5!  It is always very exciting starting a new school year, especially with a new teacher.  I am extremely excited to start my journey here at Gors Community School and look forward to teaching your child this year.  I have been teaching in Cardiff for the past 5 years, and after moving to Swansea 2 years ago I am looing forward to teaching a little closer to home!  This autumn newsletter outlines some key information for the coming half term. Over the next couple of days your children will be reconnected on Class Dojo with me as their teacher, your parent codes will be sent out.  This is a great tool for communication and for you to see what we get up to in class.  On Wednesday 13th September there will be an opportunity for you to come in after school to meet youor child's teacher - further information will follow closer to the time.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.  I hope that we all have a successful year 5!

P.E. will be held on a Friday afternoon.  We will start the year by focusing on gymnastic skills.  Children will need appropriate indoor clothing for this e.g. t-shirt and jogging bottoms, leggings or shorts.  Please ensure your child's name is on all school uniform and P.E. kit.

Reading Books

All of the children have reading books that have been issued to their level.  Please try to read every night return the book to school every day.  Once a week children will read with a teacher and be able to change their book if needed.

This half term the children and I decided that we wanted to learn all about Egypt.  We will not only look at the history of the Egyptians themselves, we will also look at the geography of the country and culture of Egypt today.  We will look into the pyramids, the River Nile and the famous.

This year we will be carrying out a pic n mix style of homework in which the children will choose which piece of homework they would like to complete.  They will have a variety of options that will give them the opportunity to be creative and complete tasks they enjoy.

Literacy and Numeracy

In year 5 the children will have the opportunity to use their literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects throughout the school day.  We will focus on key fundamental maths skills in our directed lessons, the children will than have to apply these skills to solve problems in other subjects.  We will complete daily mental maths activities and focus on our times tables regularly.  In literacy we will look at different genres of writing, starting with writing a diary entry. Our handwriting, punctuation, grammar and spelling skills will also be developed throughout this half term.
