Mathematical Development - Subtraction Tutorial

Children often find subtraction sums quite challenging.  A good method is to turn the subtraction sum into a sum that the child finds easier i.e. addition.  In the example below the number being subtracted is used as the starting point.  Amounts are then added to the number in order to get to the target number i.e. the larger number.  By completing the subtraction in this way, the child is able to find the difference between the two numbers.  The answer is the total amount added to reach the target number i.e. the circled numbers.
