Mathematical Development - Doubles Tutorial

When looking at double numbers it can be useful to use visual representations.  The example below shows a visual representation for doubling 7.  Circles are used to indicate the number (7) and then a further 7 circles are recorded to double the number.  A useful trick for doubling 2 digit and 3 digit numbers is to consider each digit independently.  Doubling of 2 digit and 3 digit numbers is also shown below.  Be careful with this 'trick' as it only works for numbers below 5!  Doubling digits with the value of 5 and above can cause some place value problems with 2 and 3 digit numbers!  However this might be a good discussion point with your child!
