Mathematical Development - Approximation Tutorial

This video demonstrates how approximations can be used to answer more difficult sums.  Children can find sums that break 10/100 quite difficult and creating an approximation sum can be very useful.  In the example, the two numbers are rounded to the nearest 10 and a new sum is created.  This is a sum that the child should find easier to answer.  The answer to the original sum can then be found by taking away the difference between sum 1 and sum 2.  This is an abstract method involving mental strategies and it is aimed at Year 2 children.  However younger children may be able to appreciate the mathematical concepts involved.
