Dear Parent / Carer ,

The school is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. On July 16th, between 12:00pm and 7:00pm, we are holding a Summer Celebration on the school grounds, with alternative indoor arrangements being organised if the weather is inclement. We hope to attract as many past and present pupils and staff as possible to the event. From 12:00pm to 2:30pm, there will be guided tours of the school to see how the facilities have developed over the years. This will also be an opportunity to enjoy, reminisce and perhaps spot yourselves in some old school photographs that still adorn the walls!

As the day progresses, we hope you are able to join us for this community family day; with live music from pupils, a bar, hog roast, tea, cakes, bouncy castles, children’s activities and craft stalls. Tickets are just £2 for adults and £1 for children – tickets are available now from the School House.  We also ask that you spread the word to any past pupils you may know. To keep up to date with the event, please “like” the Facebook Bishopston Comprehensive PTA page.

Any proceeds raised during the event will be used to support the planned improvements to the school’s sports facilities. This contribution will be used in conjunction with donations from our excellent PTA and in particular substantial funds raised by the Arwyn Harris Community Sport Foundation (AHCSF). This foundation was set up by the family in memory of Arwyn Harris, who had worked in Bishopston Comprehensive School for 34 years.

The proposed improvements include a 4G pitch on our current tennis courts, an artificial cricket wicket and a new astroturf for tennis and hockey on our old tennis courts. These would be a fitting tribute and legacy to a man who left an indelible mark on the whole community. He had worked tirelessly to ensure pupils had unforgettable experiences, personally organising and leading 23 Canadian tours and 21 ski trips. He was also instrumental in developing the Community Sports Centre and tennis courts, the Multi-purpose Games Area, Community newsletters and the Christmas Golden Age concert.

It is envisaged that artist’s impressions of the new facilities will be available for all guests’ perusal on the day. These facilities will have an extremely positive effect on both school and community sport.

If anyone is able to provide match funding for the event, we would be very grateful, and ask that you contact the school to discuss further. If any local businesses would like to place an advert in the souvenir booklet please again get in touch.

Hope to see you at the event.
